ORC - Week 1
Welcome to 2024's Fall One Room Challenge. For years I've wanted to participate. I have missed the registration in the past but this year I made it a top priority to become part of this awe-inspiring movement created by Linda Weinstein.
Next, was deciding what space to enter & I knew my home office would be the perfect room to undergo a makeover. Just a little bit about me, I'm The Southern Girl - Chantée Lavette - Owner & Principal Interior Designer of Southern Girl Interiors. I'm an Eclectic Traditionalist who loves beautiful interiors no matter the style. I run a Full Service & E-Design Interior Design Company based in the Atlanta, GA area. You can explore more about me & my company via this link -> Southern Girl Interiors.
In case you're unfamiliar with the ORC, it's hosted annually in the Spring & Fall allowing Designers, DIYers, & Design Enthusiast to share their behind-the-scenes progress of transforming a space over 8 weeks. How EXCITING is it to reveal a new layer each week. Please visit all of my fellow participates to see how their design journeys unfold over the coming weeks until the BIG Finale.
Like many home offices, it was once a bedroom. Ours was the smallest room in the house, so it was perfect for my needs.
Here's how the space began after our youngest son moved out. The "Then Then".
My Goals:
Create a Mood/Vibe that truly reflects my personal style.
Use my favorites: The color green, animal print, blue & white Chinoiserie, & items I have collected for years that were packed away in the garage & attic.
Create a fully functional design office for client folders, tile, wood, carpet & fabric samples.
Here's where I am today - The "Now".
The design of this space started around some wallpaper I had for another space in a different home but never used. I decided to use it along with other mishmash pieces - I even have a YouTube Channel (Southern Girl Interiors) with short transforming videos of this space.
Click on either of the 2 pictures below to watch my short transformation videos.
My Plans:
Use as many of my existing office pieces.
Swap out pieces from other rooms in our home for a fresh & affordable outcome.
Do some "DIY" via painting & wallpaper installation.
But like all things & people, we evolve. The function of my space was never quite adequate for all my needs. I needed my space to feel like me & be surrounded by all my favorite things. This time my approach would be the same process I do for all my clients - "Intentional Design".
The Inspiration
When designing, inspiration can come from anywhere. For my office, it started with the rug hands down. When I saw it, I know it was the one item to jumpstart my space. I looked at many options, always being drawn back to the "One". A quality rug is one area I always recommend investing more into because of the value add to a space & durable they must have to stand the test of time. My go-to is wool, but other quality options are available if a client is allergic to wool or prefers a non-animal product. I have an awesome Blog "How to Pick the Perfect Size & Style Rug for Your Space". that provides more knowledge about purchasing quality rugs for your home.
