Design Diaries: The Reveal When the Room Finally Felt Finished

Tall concrete planter from Amazon

Sometimes you don't realize what's missing from a room until you finally see it complete.

When this project started, I thought we were solving one problem:

Our nearly 17-foot windows needed drapery.

That's it.

At least that's what I told myself. 😂

But design has a funny way of revealing what a room actually needs.

Once I could imagine those long linen panels framing the windows, I started looking differently at everything around them.

The wall.

The fireplace.

The paint.

The lighting.

The rug.

Suddenly, the room wasn't asking for curtains from TwoPages.

It was asking for connection.

It Started With Scale

Our family room has always had beautiful volume.

But volume comes with responsibility.

With nearly 17-foot ceilings, pieces that would feel substantial in another room can suddenly feel small.

That's why the drapery couldn't simply cover the windows.

It needed to respond to the architecture.

The same was true of the wall behind the room.

Instead of filling that enormous wall with more artwork or décor, we created a 5-by-4 architectural molding grid.

It gave the wall presence without clutter.

Sometimes a big wall doesn't need more stuff. It needs better structure.

Color Brought Everything Together

Benjamin Moore Beachcomber 993 became the bridge between everything happening in the room.

It's warm and rich without making the space feel dark.

We carried that same color onto the fireplace.

Originally, the brick fireplace competed with the direction the room was taking.

Painting it didn't make the fireplace disappear.

It allowed it to become part of the composition instead of fighting to be the star.

Not every beautiful feature needs to shout.

The Details Created Atmosphere

The remote sconces along the stairs and rechargeable up-lights around the fiddle tree aren't necessarily the first things you notice.

And that's okay.

Good design isn't only about what immediately grabs your attention.

Sometimes the details you barely notice are responsible for how a room feels.

My Favorite Unexpected Finds:

Remote Wall Sconces — These gave us another layer of lighting along the stairs without adding another major fixture.

Rechargeable Up-lights — I used these beneath the fiddle-leaf tree, and in my use they lasted more than 12 hours on a charge.

And Then Came the Softness

The larger 9-by-12 rug grounded the furniture.

And finally, those nearly 17-foot linen panels softened all of the architecture we'd added.

Four drapery panels.

Triple French pleats.

Classic wooden rods.

And just enough drama.

Not LOOK AT MY CURTAINS! drama.

More like…

Oh, she knows she's tall. 😂

That's what I mean by restrained drama.

The Biggest Lesson From This Room

Looking at the finished room, I don't think any single decision created the transformation.

It was the relationship between them.

Scale.

Architecture.

Color.

Softness.

That's why buying more beautiful things isn't always the answer when a room doesn't feel right.

Sometimes the room already has plenty.

The pieces simply aren't talking to one another yet.

When we started Design Diaries, I said:

Sometimes a room isn't ugly. It's just not finished.

Now I understand exactly what this room had been waiting for.

It wasn't simply curtains.

It was connection.

And after years of living with this room as a beautiful white placeholder…

it finally feels like us.

Design Diaries may be closing this chapter, but there are plenty more rooms and plenty more design stories to come.

Because apparently, around here, one little design idea rarely stays little. 😂

My Extra-Tall Drapery Checklist

  • ☐ Decide whether the drapery will be stationary or functional

  • ☐ Determine whether privacy/light control is required

  • ☐ Measure the installation point to finished hem, not simply the window

  • ☐ Consider professional/laser measurement for extra-tall applications

  • ☐ Confirm finished panel length - (TwoPages has helpful instructions and video on their site)

  • ☐ Confirm finished panel width

  • ☐ Calculate desired fullness

  • ☐ Calculate expected stack back

  • ☐ Determine how much glass you want exposed

  • ☐ Select an appropriate heading/pleat style

  • ☐ Confirm fabric weight and behavior

  • ☐ Choose properly scaled rods and finials

  • ☐ Verify bracket projection and placement

  • ☐ Confirm hardware can support the treatment

  • ☐ Confirm exact ring/hook quantity per panel

  • ☐ Check whether rings/hooks are included or ordered separately

  • ☐ Unpack and inspect ALL hardware before installation day

  • ☐ Confirm wall/anchor requirements

  • ☐ Plan for steaming after installation

  • ☐ Allow natural fabrics time to relax and settle

  • ☐ For very tall installations, seriously consider a professional

If you're considering custom drapery for tall or two-story windows, save this list:

That's a lot more than:

“How long should my curtains be?” 😂

And that's exactly the point.
